Oscar Fixes Instruments

Piano, Fretted Instrument & Electronics repair service on PEI

Hi there! I'm Oscar Kempe, a lifelong musician and repair technician based in Eastern PEI.

I like to think of instrument care like maintaining a house: it’s an ongoing process, and priorities can vary. Even if you don’t have the budget to modernize your old farmhouse, it’s still worth sweeping the floor and touching up the paint.Whether you need a quick fix, a full rebuild, or something in between, I’ll help get your instrument back into working shape and keep it playing for years to come.

Here is a short list of the instruments I am comfortable working on:

  • Acoustic Guitars

  • Banjos

  • Mandolins

  • Pianos (Upright & Grand)

  • Electric Guitars & Basses

  • Pedals & Amplifiers

  • Microphones & Cables

  • Keyboards & Synthesizers

About Me

I've lived in rural areas for most of my life, and started fixing my own instruments out of necessity when I was a kid. I built my first instrument with my grandfather when I was 10 years old, and I've been tinkering ever since.I studied Jazz Guitar at the Victoria Conservatory of Music before completing my Bachelors of Music at Humber College. During my undergrad I took a keen interest in audio engineering and microphone design. Later, I studied aural piano tuning with the International Piano Technicians School. These days I am one of the only technicians servicing Fender Rhodes pianos in the northeast.

Fender Rhodes & Classic Electric Pianos

Almost every Rhodes piano in Atlantic Canada is broken, or is on its last legs. Their wiring has corroded in our humid maritime climate, and the hundreds of small rubber & felt components in the keyboard action have degraded and lost function. This can manifest as leaky dampers, strange sympathetic resonances, quiet/dead notes (broken pickups), or in extreme cases no output at all. Before I started fixing these keyboards, the nearest repair shops were in Toronto or New Jersey. The cost of shipping a heavy, fragile piano over 1000km for repairs is eye-watering, so when these pianos inevitably stop working they are usually left to deteriorate in sheds and basements across the region (too heavy to put in the attic). This doesn't have to be the case anymore. My mission is to restore every Rhodes in Atlantic Canada so that the next generation of musicians can experience these unique and fascinating instruments. While my other repair services are generally PEI-specific, I will travel anywhere in the maritime provinces for Rhodes pianos. If you have a broken old keyboard and don't have the budget to restore it, I may be interested in taking it off your hands to restore it myself, or to use for parts if it's too far gone - please reach out for more information.
